He can lift mountains

Tying tiny silver bells to my ankles
I went into a dancing frenzy

the town-folks thought
I was going crazy

my mother-in-law complained
I would ruin the clan

and the prince delivered
a cupful of poison

for me to drink and die.
I laughed as I drank the poison

but no harm came to me!
Why can’t they see

my body and soul belongs
to the Dark-One.

He can lift mountains
and protect me.

A translation of an original poem of Mirabai in Hindi.
