It is over there across from Texas

Eighteen year olds,
Fresh from high school,
Or those who never been to high school,
Enroll themselves to be soldiers
To fight the war in Iraq.

They’re sent there to kill or be killed
Or lose their limbs and minds in the war.
When asked: Where is Iraq?
“It is over there across from Texas.”
Most of them reply.

I wonder if they knew where Iraq is
And what this war is all about –
To fight fear, not real enemy –
Would they still volunteer to enroll
To fight the war in Iraq?
