Bhagavad Gita 17: 20-22

Charity given to the deserving
In the act of charity itself,
With no expectations for return,
Is the sattvic charity.

Charity given half-heartedly,
Expecting favors or spiritual
Blessings in return,
Is the rajasic charity.

Charity given to the undeserving
At the wrong time and place
Without feelings of affection or respect,
Is the tamastic charity.
